Value Proposition Guide

Value proposition is a promise you give your potential customers about the value they’ll receive after choosing you. The value can be physical product, emotional change and feeling, doesn’t matter. It should be sum of the all value you’ll provide to your customers. In this guide I’ll explain value proposition elements, how to create your value propositions, how to get help when creating your value propositions and some value proposition examples with the canvas.

Firstly let’s start with what does value proposition does. A good value proposition explains how your products adds value to its target customers. It’s that simple.

Shopify has a great post about it and they’re using this image to explain value propositions.

It’s coming from Mario game. You know the story, when Mario gets the mushroom, he gets bigger. That mushroom is the value proposition.

How to Craft Your Value Proposition?

Before creating your value proposition, you need to understand your target audience. This is why you should first create your ideal customer profile (ICP). If you’re not familiar with ideal customer profile concept check out What is ICP and How to create your ICP articles.

Strategyzer has a great canvas to make this process simpler. Do this exercise for your own Shopify store.

First fill the customer side and fill the customer pains, jobs and gains.

Then think about your store, products and some brand advantages like fast shipping, free return policy etc. Just write them out in this map. This is a brainstorming session so don’t try to evaluate when you’re working on it. Just put down all ideas you have.

After completing this session, you can start to evaluate them and use AI power here.

I prefer Google Bard here. My prompts are very simple.

  • I’m selling …… (giving details about my products here)
  • You’re a senior consultant with 20+ years of experience. You’re a master at creating the most unique and unusual growth strategies. Common Mistakes

There are a few common mistakes. These are generally because of the value propositions of world-class brands.

If you’re just started your store and new to market, your value proposition should be different than Apple, Nike or Tesla, right?

Our main purpose is making a clear statement so our ICP easily understands why should they care about us.

After creating some alternative value propositions you can score them based on relevance and clarity.

If you want to get your audience attention, value proposition should be clear, simple, easily understandable and highly relevant.
